Jet Fire Coating

CharCoat JF is our revolutionary new Hydrocarbon Jet Fire Rated Coating which is a 2 component 100% Epoxy based Intumescent, 100% Solvents free.

CharCoat JF is suitable for the protection of steel, aluminium or composites from Cellulosic to Hydrocarbon Pool and Jet Fires.

CharCoat JF is intended to protect Structural Steel, vessels, piping, actuators, valves, piping and cable trays from hydrocarbon pool and/or jet fire to extend the functional integrity for an extended period of time. As tested by Intertek, CharCoat JF can withstand 1400C constant temperature under ISO 22899-1 Jet Fire Standard; demonstrating a performance far and above the standard hydrocarbon pool fire (1100C).

NOTE: A Jet Fire / Spray Fire is described as a turbulent diffusion flame resulting from the combustion of a fuel continuously released with some significant momentum in a particular direction or directions.” CharCoat JF is NOT tested to UL1709.

Pool fires represent a significant element of the risk associated with major accidents on installations that may have large liquid hydrocarbon inventories.”

Jet Fire Coating

Hydrocarbon Jet Fire vs. Hydrocarbon Pool Fire

A jet or spray fire is a turbulent diffusion flame(typically burning at + 1400°C) resulting from the combustion of a fuel continuously released with some significant momentum in a particular direction or directions.”

OTI- 95 634 / ISO 22899-1 Jet Fire Test Procedure

  • Fuel: Propane
  • Storage pressure:  >2 bar
  • Nozzle diameter:  17.8mm
  • Velocity:  40 m/sec
  • Flow rate:  0.3 kg/sec
Gas fire protection

“A pool fire (burning at 1100°C) is a turbulent diffusion fire burning above a horizontal pool of vaporizing hydrocarbon fuel where the fuel has zero or low initial momentum.

Fires in the open will be well ventilated (fuel-controlled), but fires within enclosures may become under-ventilated (ventilation-controlled).

Pool fires may be static (e.g. where the pool is contained) or ‘running’ fires.

Pool fires represent a significant element of the risk associated with major accidents on installations that may have large liquid hydrocarbon inventories.”

Typical Application of CharCoat JF

Spraying CharCoat JF can be completed with either a standard airless unit, or plural component machines. With standard airless units, once mixed, CharCoat JF has a 40-minute pot life and is ideal for small areas where portable machinery is required.

Casting CharCoat JF

For valves, actuators, piping and other non-movable machinery and parts, CharCoat JF has a solution through technology!

Typical of CharCoat Passive Fire Protection products, we do not interrupt or shutdown the asset. Utilizing 3D scanning technology, casting of machinery is completed off-site, while the asset stays on-site and online. After casting of the unit is completed, our specialists fit the cast onsite, creating access panels and piping outlets in minimal time without interfering with the units’ capacity.

For piping and steelwork, we only need the OD or section type to develop a solution for our customers. This application can be castable or spray applied.

Properties and Test Data

LPG Rail Car Protection

CharCoat JF has also been Certified by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) / Federal Rail Administration (FRA) to provide the fire protection requirements for LPG Rail Cars when applied at 3.25 mm DFT. This solves the issues of vibration and settling of the fiber insulation.

CharCoat JF provides the fire protection requirements at 3. 25mm, replacing 2 inches of fiber insulation and the steel cladding.  Thereby reducing the overall outside diameter of the tank for potential grater payload

CharCoat JF applied at 3.25 mm,  only adds less than 1 pound per square foot of weight to the rail car, reducing the weight of a typical car by 9% by eliminating the requirement of steel cladding to protect the fiber insulation.

CharCoat JF is maintenance free and provides corrosion protection (no more CUI) as well are fire protection.
